Chiang Mai - Saturday

Saturday

Walked for miles last night. Initially to the night market and then around and around, my poor feet hurt.  It was fabulous.  The market mainly full of tourist stuff, but some of it was good. Some of the fabrics are great.  It's still New Year over here so bright lanterns and lights up everywhere.

We sat and listened to three girls playing music and further on to a small market selling food where we had dinner and listened to a Thai James Blunt.  Quite good really, worth hanging around for a hour or so.

Today the Thai's are out in force as it's Saturday.  We wandered around the food market just around the corner.  Interesting, amazing and not for the faint hearted. Would love to know what half of the stuff is. I am going to make an effort to find out., before we leave.  There is food everywhere, they are obsessed with it, you could graze all day, well Rod could quite happily.

Chiang Mai is huge city, really spread out. But at the centre is a tiny old city which originally had a red brick external wall.  It is in ruins now but the ring road runs around the edge of it, and some of the wall still exists.  We are staying just over the road from the ring road.

Local electricity supply!

We turned left this morning and walked in the opposite direction passed about five temples (which we will come back too, not wearing shorts) had a walk through the municipal park and down around the alley ways. There is commerce everywhere from stalls selling pasties to big engine shops and electronic warehouses.

But the air is quite polluted, traffic everywhere near the ring road and I have found myself wheezing a bit today, which is a sure sign. The roads are packed with pickups, the back stuff with families coming into town for Saturday, and often the kids are giggling and waving madly as you. It's lovely.

We wandered back to the hotel for a rest and lunch, and although it was the first proper meal I had been able to eat for a while, I had Pad Thai to die for. If this is the standard of food, and for £2, I think we are going to enjoy ourselves here.

And that was in the morning.

We jumped a cab about 1pm which crawled out of town and then up into the hills to a famous temple called Doa Suthep.

It was stunning, but reminded me of temple Walt Disney style. It's rather nice , there are people who have come to pray, children running around playing tag, tourists taking pictures from every angles, people having picnics. They just don't care and are welcoming to everyone. It's part of the Buddhist way.

We decided against trying out the deep fried bugs!
