We've had a day off today! We woke up still completely full from yesterday and glad that we hadn't arranged to do anything in particular other than roam around some temples.
We couldn't face breakfast, so settled for a cup of tea.
Unfortunately the SD card jammed in my camera half way through the morning, so we gave up on the temple walk. Instead we pottered around the small avenues and then I went for a foot and leg massage.
There are loads of beauty parlours everywhere. Proper ones, not seedy ones, before you ask. They do everything and at night you can see rows of Thai ladies having their feet rubbed. It was bliss. They washed and scrubbed my feet. Massaged oil into them for twenty minutes, followed by twenty minutes of reflexology and a decent calf massage, and then a back and shoulder massage. Further bliss and all for £3.50. Rod sat in a bar next door and had a beer.
I am off on a ramble now. The roads are packed with small trucks, cars, mopeds and bicycles are moving what seems a harmonious stream. People on mopeds weave in and out of the trucks at a steady pace without problems, they've been doing it since birth. Nobody gets angry or toots their horns. Having been in taxis here before, everyone cuts each other up, but the drivers never get irritated or swear, puts me to shame.
Then you get the Europeans/US who come here, hire mopeds, sometimes for the first time, and think they can drive like they do back home. It doesn't work and is a source of disaster. A young British girl was involved in a bad, bad accident a few days ago. I haven't heard that she survived, has anyone heard. I hope she will be okay.
We are still full up and cannot face food.
I have discovered smoothies. Everywhere there are little stalls with fruits that will knock you up a smoothie for 35p. My current favourite is mango, apple and banana, with no added sugar. Bliss. They are becoming my lunch of choice. You don't need anything else. I want to buy a smoothie maker when I get home.
Rod was feeling a little rough today. Not from anything in particular, probably just change of water, oil, warmth and being away. Oh and we were still stuffed from yesterday, my dinner was another smoothie! Yum.
Tonight was a walk to the night market via a different area of Chiang Mai. And didn't we see a different side. This was the side of old, fat European men with young Thai girls, boys and few we weren't sure of. Very seedy. I know that it is part of Thailand, but it was very brash and unappealing. We wandered around for a while, but soon decided to go back to our side of the river, and our quietish streets and cafes.
A really good day.
